You don’t have to go all the way to Africa to go on a safari. Visit the dunes surrounding Zandvoort aan Zee and spot our Big Five!
In Zandvoort you can find deer everywhere. The dunes are their home but they also like to wander through our gardens, streets and even on the boulevard!
2. European Bison
The National Park Zuid Kennemerland is the only place in the Netherlands where you can come face to (huge) face with European bison. An encounter with one of those impressive creatures will throw you back to primal times.
3. Konik horses
Another hero from the past. You can find these brown/grayisch pony-sized horses in the Nationaal Park Zuid Kennemerland where they like to graze in herds.
4. Scottish Highlander
The third big grazer in our Big Five list. Together with the bison and the Konik horses, the Scottisch Highlander is used as an 'instrument' to manage the vegetation in the Kennemer dunes.
With their fluffy tails and black pointy ears their a joy to watch. At sunrise and sunset you have the best chance to encounter one. They are a bit shy, so just sit still and give them plenty of space. Quite often their curiosity wins from their shyness.
